One of the oldest and most fierce rivalries in Arizona high school football is renewed as the Miami Vandals travel a few miles down Highway 60 to face the Globe Tigers in the battle for the Copper Bell. Miami enters the contest operating a hard-nosed, run-heavy offensive scheme. The Vandals use heavy 22-personnel (two running backs, two tight ends) to establish a downhill rushing attack. They rely on power-O, counter-trey, and a devastating fullback lead-block system, intending to physically wear down the opposing defensive front and keep the game clock moving. Defensively, Miami runs a textbook 4-3 under front, shifting their defensive line toward the strong side of the offensive formation to eliminate cutback lanes.
Globe counters with a modern, up-tempo spread-pistol offense designed to utilize the full width of the field. The Tigers want to stretch Miami’s heavier linebackers horizontally, utilizing rapid-fire RPOs (Run-Pass Options) to force edge defenders into conflict. Globe’s quarterback is a dynamic dual-threat weapon, frequently pulling the ball on zone-reads to attack the boundary. Defensively, the Tigers operate a 3-3-5 odd-stack, using their team speed to bring pressure from unpredictable angles. They rely on their hybrid safety “rovers” to play aggressively downhill in run support while maintaining the speed to drop back into coverage.

The Trench Warfare and Edge Containment
The outcome of the Copper Bell game revolves entirely around edge containment. When Globe has the ball, Miami’s defensive ends must stay disciplined. If they crash inside to tackle the running back on the zone-read, the Globe quarterback will pull the ball and exploit the vacated perimeter for massive yardage. Conversely, Miami’s offensive line must win the leverage battle against Globe’s aggressive 3-3-5 front. If the Vandals’ center and guards can consistently churn out three to four yards on first down, they will neutralize the Tigers’ blitz packages and bleed the game clock into the fourth quarter.
