High school football in Wyoming returns on August 28, and this season brings some significant changes worth knowing about before it begins. Worland is moving up to Class 3A, Shoshoni has canceled its 9-a-side football season, and the state championship games will be played at War Memorial Stadium in Laramie on November 13 and 14, closing out the season as it has for years.
Four of Wyoming’s five classifications began practices in mid-August, with the Class 4A teams being the first to use protective gear. The state is using the same five-class system it has implemented since 2020: 10 schools in Class 4A, 12 in 3A, 15 in Class 2A, 14 in the 9-a-side football division, and 14 in the 6-a-side football division. In the 6-a-side format of American football, seven teams make up each conference, and the top four from each league advance to the postseason: the first round is played on October 30, and the semifinals on November 6.
Star Valley begins the year as the team to beat. The Braves entered last season’s standings with a 23-game winning streak and have been the state’s number one team for a long time. Cody was right behind them, in second place, at the start of last year, and both programs are expected to be among the best again at the beginning of 2026. Wyoming is also one of the few states, along with New York and Oklahoma, that begins this season with an active winning streak of 50 games or more, demonstrating the dominance some programs can have even in a sparsely populated state.
Complete team schedules are available through the Wyoming High School Activities Association and MaxPreps’ Wyoming football section, broken down by standings. Since the WHSAA only directly sets matchups within the conference, non-conference opening games vary from program to program, so it’s worth checking each team’s page for exact dates and times.
